MILESSTONES JAZZ CLUB THIS MARCH

RETURN OF JIM MULLEN ORGAN TRIO TO MILESTONES JAZZ CLUB

This month’s concert at Milestones Jazz Club on Sunday 7 March features the return of a band of outstanding talent and status - The Jim Mullen Organ Trio.

Headed by the UK's finest jazz guitarist, Jim Mullen, The Organ Trio have rapidly become one of the most talked of jazz groups on the UK scene today, playing a mix of standards, originals and modern jazz with a variety of tone, texture and attack that draws as much on understated impressionism and contemporary ideas as the funky ‘Jimmy Smith style’ grooves.

The Organ Trio have been working as a unit for several years and have appeared at venues and festivals nationwide and internationally including last month at Ronnie Scott’s supporting The Crusaders.

The band has acquired a strong identity and creative momentum, stirring much attention from the national press recently with the release of their fifth CD, 'Make Believe’.

A fluid and melodic player with a punchy, percussive quality, Jim Mullen is a truly original voice in contemporary jazz guitar, admired by his peers and the winner of many accolades over the years including BT Jazz awards and being named ‘Best Guitar’ at the British Jazz awards.

Jim's unique style and sound on the instrument is, in part, due to his use of the distinctive Wes Montgomery style of using his thumb instead of a plectrum.

He is equally at home with bebop, blues or funk, working in the '70's and '80's with Morrissey Mullen and with legendary names such as Jimmy Smith, Mose Allison, Jimmy Witherspoon, Percy Sledge and The Average White Band.

Jim is given excellent support by the twisting lines of young virtuoso Mike Gorman on organ and Matt Skelton’s lively drumming providing the kind of platform against which any worthwhile musician can shine.

The band’s full line-up features Jim Mullen (guitar), Mike Gorman (organ) and Matt Skelton (drums).

QUOTES...
'Lovers of the Hammond trios of yore should rush to hear this ferociously swinging super group. The group boasts three of the best players on their respective instruments in the country…'
- Tim Barlow (JazzWise Magazine)

'The deceptive nonchalance with which Watson and Mullen pass the lead from one to the other is a delight in itself, and their accompaniments are small wonders of delicacy and tact. But when they do get a groove going as on Mark Knopfler's 'Local Hero', it's a killer.'
- Dave Gelly, The Observer
