MILESTONES JAZZ CLUB FEBRUARY

GIFTED YOUNG SINGER’S LOCAL DEBUT AT MILESTONES JAZZ CLUB
***
This month’s concert at Milestones Jazz Club on Sunday 7 February features an exciting and gifted young singer from Newcastle fast making her mark on the UK
jazz scene – Zoe Gilby and The Andy Champion Trio.
***
Zoe Gilby has already been praised by Courtney Pine as deserving of wider recognition when he played her debut CD on his BBC Radio 2 show. Zoe’s is a versatile voice, which mixes great jazz technique and a healthy dose of the blues with a deeply expressive and agile quality.
***
A childhood steeped in jazz means that her many influences are clear - not only great vocalists like Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson and Anita O'Day but also revered instrumentalists like Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker and John Coltrane.
***
"I was brought up on listening to jazz", says Zoe, "I have had this passion passed on to me from my father who worked professionally as a jazz trumpet player and arranger for over 40 years."
***
In 2007 she released her debut CD, ‘Now That I Am Real’, which has subsequently been broadcast on radio stations across Europe and the US. While still so young, Zoe has already performed with fine musicians like Louis Stewart and Jim Mullen, at international jazz festivals around the UK and at prestigious venues like Ronnie Scott’s Club in London.
***
Zoe’s long-time accompanist, the endlessly resourceful double bass player Andy Champion, will lead sympathetic support on a repertoire of American songbook classics and modern jazz standards. The band’s full line-up features Zoe Gilby (vocals), Andy Champion (double bass), Simon Brown (piano) and Brian McAllister (drums).
***
Listen to Zoe Gilby's music at http://www.myspace.com/zoegilby or visit the club website at http://www.milestonesjazzclub.co.uk/
***
All Milestones gigs are held on the first Sunday of every month and take place at Hotel Hatfield, Esplanade, Lowestoft with the doors opening at 8pm.Admission - £7 / £6 (concession).

TOM MALLIN PAINTING AT AUCTION

STUDIO CLUTTER by Tom Mallin
A painting I cannot recollect, 'Studio Clutter,' has turned up for auction in Scotland, under the hammer with Swan & Turner . It appears alongside work by Michael Ayrton (who my father knew). The Lot Number is 284 and auction is on Saturday 30th January.

'Studio Clutter' is very much in the mixed style particular to Tom Mallin in the 1950s - the attempt at fusing Realism and Cubism. I think it's a stunning painting.

Zero Waste Solutions for climate change & jobs
What we do with waste impacts society, the environment and the local economy. Waste is often seen to be a problem, yet in some communities waste is seen as a valuable resource that can be used to create jobs and reduce the environmental impact of disposal facilities and technologies.
***
Research has shown that reuse, recycling and composting reduces carbon dioxide emissions compared to landfill and incineration and international research shows that more jobs are created in reuse, recycling and composting than in landfill or incineration.
***
Recent research by NEF looked at the social impact of different professions. Waste recycling workers reduce carbon emissions and for each £1 spent on wages £12 of value will be generated, on the other hand, investment bankers in the City of London destroy £7 of social value for each £1 that they generate.
***
We can reduce dangerous greenhouse gas emissions and create jobs that have social and environmental benefits through Zero Waste programmes. Zero Waste is one of the fastest, cheapest and most effective strategies available for combating climate change. We would like to work with communities to stop incineration, other ‘end-of-pipe’ disposal technologies and bailing out the banks and campaign instead for investment in new green jobs and a zero waste economy for a resilient future.
***
Zero Waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.
***
Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.

Zero Waste will prevent the pollution of land, water or air that is threatening our planetary, human, animal or plant wellbeing.."

Eco Artists Wanted

Deepdale Backpackers & Camping and Deepdale Farm are holding their annual North Norfolk Coast Earth Day on Thursday 22nd April. They are looking for artists or school groups who would like to get creative with scrap and recyclable materials to take part in a Scrap Heap Art Challenge.

The Scrap Heap Art Challenge will take place throughout the day. Artists will be welcome to use any of the recyclable or scrap items available on the Deepdale site to create sculptures or art pieces that will then be displayed around the hostels and campsite.

The Scrap Heap Art Challenge will be judged by a small panel of judges, who will be looking for creativity, unusual use of recyclable materials and even audience participation. “As a judge I’ll be looking for an artwork which makes me stop and think”, said Andrea, one of the judging panel.

Artists will be promoted on the Deepdale website (www.deepdalefarm.co.uk) and the winning artist or school team will win a stay in a tipi and be invited to be a judge at next years Scrap Heap Art Challenge.

A Joker

I couldn't believe it: not only were the pavements icy last week, the ice was turning to ice (vodka and lemon). Some joker had emptied a half-hundred weight sack of ice cubes in the gutter!

Poetry lives - Ed Coletti

Ed Coletti is an American Poet with difference. Do visit his blog site here

WHAT IS IS NOT

Shades of Richard Wilson's seminal 80's 'Oil' or a clever photo transposing sky and earth? How I wish either or both were true. A main water pipe burst at the factory today which resulted in a terrible flood. My space is just about safe and dry but worry what will happen next...

A Rustic Loaf

Despite the snow, I'd promised myself an ordinary kind of weekend - cooking and eating and generally relaxing. I should have known, as this loaf came out of my new bread machine perfect, only for its top to deflate like an over-pumped ego, that the weekend wouldn't be that relaxing. A wonderful bread machine though (thanks Col).

Snapped on my way to work

A rather nice house in the snow.

Two For The New Year

Here are two photos at the new year. The first: steps at Waterloo Park, Norwich.

Snow Passes

A flurry of snow on the Art Factory roof. It is the beginning of my fourth year at my factory studio.
